They are not serious. Not even remotely. They have made this excruciatingly clear over the past decade. They despise democracy and their own voter-base. I understand the value of recording what ought to be done in Platonic principle, but you DO understand that part, right?
As Teddy Roosevelt said: "No people is wholly civilized where a distinction is drawn between stealing an office and stealing a purse." I used to believe that only one party would stoop to such treachery, and the other was merely spineless. Learning otherwise changed everything.
I certainly don't want to be a wet-blanket, but you need a strategy far beyond presenting good ideas; we've had those for decades, and they're being ignored for a reason. Acting in good faith with the DNC is, well...akin to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCeD2gF9jUo
I completely agree, Joe! I’m running for SC-85 and unfortunately the state house districts would stay gerrymandered even if HR-1 were to pass, wouldn’t they? For the state level, I think the Legislature would have to pass an independent redistricting commission on its own, correct?
Yes! Both parties have been complicit in the ultrapartisianship that has neutered constitutional checks and balances. Differentiating the Democratic party as champion of a non-partisian underlying governance framework would be an epic accomplishment. I agree that tackling gerrymandering is a great first step. I've recently posted about several other feasible, specific actions, that democrats might take to re-set the playing field in favor of voters rather than partisian office holders. Here's a teaser from https://substack.com/@chrisgunderson/p-185427727.
Idea #1 - Legislative amendments to existing laws that add specific, objective enforceability criteria for delimiting Congressional prerogatives from Executive prerogatives…
Idea #2 - … laws would establish minimal qualification standards for all officials whose appointment requires Congressional approval…
Idea #3 - New laws that establish fast track review of the legality of Executive Orders..
Gerrymandering is a winning issue for Democrats who are asking voters to let them govern in 26. In addition to the $$ issues like gas and grocery prices gerrymandering reform will oust corrupt politicians.
Right on Joe!
